SECOND CHANCE – NEW STAGE FOR XMAS TREES

Planning to throw it to a waste container on the Three Kings Day? The central Christmas decoration of your household deserves more! Give it a second (or even a third) chance and let it stand out between the National Theatre buildings and on stage. Bring your Christmas tree to the National Theatre’s piazzeta and join the artists in placing it to a temporary wood.

New stage for Xmas trees – a spontaneous accomplishment in urban landscape / the National Theatre’s piazzeta 6.1.–25.1. 2012

You can bring your Christmas tree and take part in the workshop with artists at the National Theatre’s piazzeta from January 6^th to 8^th, from 12 to 5 pm. A gala opening of the forest will take place on January 8^th at 6 pm at the National Theatre’s piazzeta, accompanied by a music performance of Václav Havelka III. (Please the Trees) and the Club of Horn-blowers of the Czech Hunter Union.

The National Theatre’s piazzeta hosts the exhibition project already for the second time. The first edition of Second Chance took place in 2011, gaining a lot of publicity and critical acclaim. Marcela Straková, one of the people behind the project and the curator of exhibitions at the New Stage of the National Theatre, explains more:

“The piazzeta of the National Theatre, the open area behind the building of the New Stage, invites passers-by to take part in a symbolical returning of “used” Christmas trees to their home, to a wood. A Christmas tree becomes a member of almost all families during Christmas time: it is the most important of all Christmas symbols. However, the honoured tree, the central element of a Christmas household, turns into waste lying in the streets on the Three Kings’ Day. The installation presents Christmas trees from various Prague districts, forming a simulation of a natural wood. The last short reunion – the last chance to be admired.”

This year, the Second Chance is not the last one: the THIRD CHANCE will follow in the form of another of multimedia concerts at the New Stage. On February 9^th, surrounded by the recycled Christmas trees, the band Please the Trees will turn the hall of the New Stage into a hunter ball totally out of the ordinary. Your ex-tree will thus get a chance to become the star of our line-up.
